Jakarta traditional folk story - Si Pitung

As if you grew up in Jakarta, or Indonesia, you might know "Si Pitung" story. Pitung was like the Robin Hood of Indonesia.  So for those of you who dont know, here is the Legend Of Pitung.






Pitung is a good young man from Rawa Belong. He diligently studied the Qoran in Haji Naipin. After he finished learning the Qoran, he was trained in martial arts. After years of seeking religious knowledge, his ability of martial arts also increased.

At that time the Dutch were colonized Indonesia. Pitung pitied to see how the poor people still lives poorly, cant afford foods, while the kumpeni (the name for the Netherlands), a group of employer and the landlord lives happily in luxury. Homes and their fields guarded by thugs who ferociously.

With the assistance of his friends of the Rais and Jii, Pitung began planning the robbery of the employer and the wealthy landlords. The revenue of their robbery were distributed to the poor. In front of a starving family home laid a sack of rice. Families who got it now able to pay compensation for moneylenders. And orphaned children gets clothes and other gifts.

Pitung did it succesfuly with his friends because of two things. First, he mastered martial arts and second, they are immune to bullets. However, the robbery victim of Pitung is rich, so with the Dutch army, they always trying to persuade people to open their mouth to tell the weakness of Pitung. 

The Dutch also use violence to force people to testify. One day, kumpeni and wealthy landlords managed to get information about family Pitung. So they seized both of Pitung's parents and the Haji Naipin. With a heavy ordeal finally they get the information about what is Pitung weakness. 

After they know the weakness of Pitung, the Dutch ambushed Pitung . Of course Pitung and his friends fight. But unfortunately, information about the immune secret of Pitung already been told to the Dutch. So, He was pelted with rotten eggs. And there goes Pitung's death. Even tho Pitung was dead and considered as folk lore to Jakarta, Pitung still regarded as a defender of the common people.
